Drone photography for real estate and events: a buyer's guide

A few aerial shots can completely change how a property listing or event is seen. Drone photography shows what ground-level photos cannot: the size of a plot, how close a home is to schools and parks, or the full scale of a venue on the night.

When drone footage is worth it

Real estate

Drone photos earn their keep when the location or land is part of the selling point:

• Large plots, smallholdings and farms
• Estates and complexes with shared amenities
• Homes with views, gardens or pools worth showing off
• Commercial and development properties
• Listings where the surrounding area is a selling point

For a standard apartment, good interior photography matters more. For a home on a large stand, one aerial shot can say more than twenty photos.

Events

For weddings, festivals, launches and corporate events, drone footage adds the "wow" opening shot and shows the size of the crowd and venue. It works best combined with ground-level video, not instead of it.

Planning a shoot

1. Agree the shot list. Front of property, overhead, surrounding area, a slow reveal for video.
2. Check the weather. Wind and rain ground drones. Keep a backup date.
3. Prepare the property. Cars out of the driveway, pool clean, bins away - everything shows from above.
4. Tell the neighbours for residential shoots. It avoids awkward conversations.
5. Confirm how you want the files. Stills for listings, a short edited video for social media, and vertical cuts for Reels and TikTok.

The rules in South Africa

Commercial drone flying in South Africa is regulated by the South African Civil Aviation Authority (SACAA) under Part 101 of the Civil Aviation Regulations. Before you book, ask your provider:

• Do they operate commercially under SACAA rules, with licensed remote pilots?
• Are they insured for the shoot?
• Will they check airspace restrictions near airports and other controlled areas?
• Will they get permission where it is needed, for example in an estate or at a venue?

What drone content costs

Pricing usually depends on time on site, location and how much editing you need. Compare the cost with what the footage does: a listing that stands out on property portals and social media, or event video people share for years.
